San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease)
November 07, 2009 - The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report this morning citing that in October, the number of unemployed Americans rose to 10.2 percent - - the highest rate since April 1983. The underemployed, or people working part-time jobs for economic reasons and those considered marginally attached, was reported at 17.5 percent, which includes unemployed numbers. While unemployment figure increased by 4.1 points over last year, the underemployed number has grown by 6.4 points outpacing the unemployed.
Doug Macklem, CEO of GigAlert.com, a new self-funded national gig board to help the underemployed, reacted to this morning’s report:
“The numbers of unemployed and underemployed are rising but people and companies still need things done. Despite the grim numbers, companies still need web designers, consultants, and computer technicians – that isn’t going away. Americans are hard workers and we are great at reinventing ourselves. Welcome to the Gig Economy. Part of our mission is to provide organization and efficiency for the gig market. We are going to continue to find ways to serve this growing community of workers.”
GigAlert.com was launched to help people looking for side work, or “gigs.” After creating a free profile, people looking for gigs subscribe to specific categories, and receive real-time text and Email alerts when gigs become available. Posting and subscribing to gig categories is free. GigAlert.com also provides job listings for companies at 90 percent less than the average job board. Jobs are syndicated to Indeed.com, the largest search engine for jobs reaching over 15 million viewers a month.
Macklem started the company after finding himself underemployed. Read more about his personal story on the “About Us” page on GigAlert.com.
