October 16, 2007 - London (longdogfinance) : The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned an advertisement by a personal loans company. The advertising regulator felt that the decision to take out a loan was depicted in the advert as ‘not a carefully considered act’ and that as if taking out a big personal loan was an ‘everyday occurrence’.
The advertisement showed a mother trying to fix an unsecured loan over a phone. Even as she was interrupted by her family members, she said to the loan adviser on the other end of the phone: “Don't worry it's always like this here. But at least I can get my credit sorted. We'd like to borrow £25,000.”
Some viewers objected to the advertisement and contended before the ASA that it was a misleading. The ASA concluded that consolidating unsecured loans was a 'serious step' which needed 'careful consideration' but the advertisement presented it in a very light-hearted tone. The ASA ensures that all advertising meets the high standards laid down in the advertising codes.
