Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, NC-SC (1888PressRelease)
February 14, 2009 - Trinity Cosmetic and General Dentistry is pleased to announce its participation in the national American Dental Association’s (ADA) Give Kids A Smile® program (GKAS). With more and more families feeling the crunch in this volatile economy, one of the items that typically gets eliminated from the budget is dental care. Yet dental health is an essential part of your overall well-being, especially in your development years. Therefore this problem should not be ignored. Trinity along with other participating dental professionals nationally will provide necessary care to children and adolescents from low-income families. The event will be held at the Trinity Cosmetic & General Dentistry office on Friday, February 12, 2009.
The event in its seventh year had provided free dental services to as many as 500,000 children at more than 1,600 sites from coast to coast. GKAS will provide children from low-income families with educational materials, screenings and, where possible, free dental care such as cleanings, X-rays and fillings and will demonstrate good oral health habits to last a lifetime.
“I have a heart for missions.” said Nikki Jones, D.D.S., owner of Trinity Cosmetic & General Dentistry. “I’ve been on an international mission trip [witnessing first-hand the results of a lack of proper dental treatment] and I recognize that there is a great need for our children inside the United States.”
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease affecting American children, five times more common than asthma. The ADA recommends that children see a dentist no later than their first birthday; however less than half (48-percent) of children entering kindergarten have seen a dentist within the past year and more than half (52-percent) of children ages six to eight have tooth decay, according to the Healthy People 2010 oral health update. Trinity and others hope is to diminish the current four percent rise in dental caries (cavities) — the first rise in 50 years —among pre-schoolers, ages 2-5, reported in April 2007 by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
