  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) April 15, 2008 - Yo San University and the Premiere Oncology Foundation reaffirm their collaborative agreement to explore a clinical and research partnership between the University and the Premiere Oncology Foundation. Their collaboration resulted in the Premiere Oncology Foundation–Yo San University Integrative Clinic partnership--the first of its kind in the Los Angeles area, situated in a community-based Phase I Clinical Cancer Trial research treatment center. This integrative approach brings the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to cancer patients, caregivers and extended family throughout the local community. This integrative partnership took in its first patient in November 2007.

Current research has shown TCM to be beneficial in addressing many problems associated with cancer and cancer treatment, including nausea, fatigue, anxiety, pain, xerostomia (dry mouth), peripheral neuropathies, headaches, hot flashes, etc.

Major oncology centers across the country such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, M D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and UCLA to name a few, are now offering acupuncture services as part of an integrative approach to the care of cancer patients. Yo San University’s partnership with the Premiere Oncology Foundation propels the University to the forefront in the exciting and rapidly growing field of integrative and complementary medicine.

The Yo San University team, led by Lawrence Lau, Dean of Academic & Clinical Affairs currently offers on-site acupuncture services once a week at the Premiere Oncology Foundation in Santa Monica. Our clinical interns benefit from this integrative partnership by observing and being directly involved in the care of oncology patients. There are plans to increase the frequency of acupuncture services offered, as well as to potentially include other modalities of TCM practice including Qi Gong/Tai Chi practice and Chinese herbal medicine. Also included in the near future are plans to develop joint research projects and studies in the field of integrative oncology, as well as setting up postgraduate doctoral-level studies in integrative oncology at Yo San University.

So, what does this mean for Yo San University? It means an extraordinary opportunity to bridge East and West and offer our students another layer of richness to Yo San’s unique academic program.
