Top Ohio State Basketball Player Announced As Guest Speaker At Local Golf Tournament

  • Sarasota-Bradenton, FL (1888PressRelease) March 18, 2017 - The Sarasota-Manatee Ohio State Alumni Club welcomes Skelton to its 15th annual Golf Outing at Legacy Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch on April 8. Skelton is an Ohio native and former High School Parade and McDonalds Basketball All-American. Playing for OSU from 1990-1994, he captained the team and was named Ohio State Player of the Year. He won back-to-back Big Ten Championships and has held many other honors including Top 50 Ohio State Greatest Players. Having played with other OSU greats, Jimmy Jackson and Lawrence Funderburke, Skelton finished his career with a 9.0 point per game average and amassed 1,055 points in his career. He ranks sixth all time in three point shots made for the Buckeye team. Currently, Skelton heads up the Jamie Skelton Basketball Academy based in Avon, Ohio. The Academy specializes in individuals, groups, teams, camps, and fitness for both boys and girls.

    A $130 participation fee entitles players to 18 holes of play at Legacy Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch, 8255 Legacy Boulevard, Bradenton. The award-winning Arnold Palmer Signature Design course features multiple elevations and virtually every hole is framed with sand and water making the look very dramatic and visually challenging. Winner of the Hole-In-One Contest will win a two-year lease on a new Ford Mustang. Other prizes will be awarded for the Straightest Drive, Closest To The Pin, Longest Putt, Longest Drive (men's and women's individual awards), as well as cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. Lunch will be included at the Ranch Grille Patio where Skelton will speak. All participates will be given chance tickets to win any one of 75-100 prizes donated by local stores, courses, hotels, restaurants, boutiques, and more. There will also be a silent auction.

    Long ball driver Eddie Fernandes will also be a part of this year's tournament. Fernandes has gone to the PGA Tour qualifying five times, has won over 25 professional mini tour events and was the 2015 US Open Long Drive Champion 45+. His longest drive is 436 yards, fastest club head speed to date is 146 mph, and his fastest ball speed to date is 218 mph. Participants may purchase a long drive from Fernandes at the first hole of the tournament. All proceeds from this tournament are used to support Sarasota and Manatee students who attend The Ohio State University. Since 1999, the Sarasota-Manatee Ohio State Alumni club has supported approximately 35 students and has dispersed more than $100,000 in scholarships. The club also supports the local community through beach clean up programs, supporting the local All-Faith's Food Bank, and supporting the Archie Griffin Golf Classic that raises money for the local Boys and Girls Clubs. Over 350 area households make up the membership of the local alumni organization. The Sarasota-Manatee OSU Club is ranked as a Scarlet Club through The Ohio State University Alumni Association and is one of the top clubs in the country.
