September 12, 2007 - Combining a knack for genealogical research with a love of writing led West Tennessee debut novelist Renee Russell to pen KATE’S PRIDE.
“I love doing genealogical research,” says Russell. “I know some people will think that sounds crazy, but anyone who’s been bitten by the bug will tell you this kind of research can be one of the most frustrating and yet the most interesting things you’ll ever do. Working with members of the McNairy County Historical Society helped me to locate information on my own ancestors and to create an accurate background for Kate’s Pride.”
The main character of Kate’s Pride is loosely based on one of Russell’s ancestors. Set in McNairy County, Tennessee, the novel follows the life of fictional character Kate Randsome as she struggles to make a life for herself after being disowned by her family and shunned by neighbors in the tumultuous years following the end of the Civil War. This is not a light read, but a story of betrayal and hope and redemption in the tradition of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.
Renee Russell is scheduled to discuss and sign KATE’S PRIDE at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, TN, Saturday October 13th from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
