August 21, 2007 - 5 members of the TigerTeam joined Stefanie Browdy’s 25 4th grade students of PS-38 for a day of fun, sun and adventure on Thursday, May 31st at the Bronx Zoo. PS-38 is located on 103rd Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan, not exactly a center of biodiversity. The day was a rare opportunity for Ms. Browdy’s class to see and learn about dozens of species with a focus of course on the endangered tiger.
Upon arrival at the Bronx Zoo, the class was split up into 5 groups, each lead by a TigerTeam runner that devoted a day off from work to educate the kids about the mysterious world of wildlife.
“It was amazing to see my students light up when they were told of the trip,” said teacher Ms. Browdy, “but far more impressive was listening to their enthusiasm for the weeks that fo-llowed. Now kids are all junior tiger experts and proud members of the TigerTeam.”
Arranging for all 25 kids to see all the zoo has to offer was no short order. Each team had to choose a team name and was given a scavenger hunt filled with questions that could only be answered by racing around the zoo for the right clues.
“The hardest part was keeping track of all of the kids, said volunteer Derrick Estes, “luckily, we had them all wear the bright new orange TigerRun shirts. Word to the wise: do not bring kids to the zoo without those shirts.”
When asked about the reason for TigerRun’s involvement with kids, TigerRun President David Wellner said, “our runners compete for the protection of tigers mainly because they derive inspiration from the animal itself. Our fascination with tigers can almost always be traced back to our childhood and quite often our zoo visits. We wanted to create the same experience for Ms. Browdy’s class.”
