August 31, 2007 - It doesn't take a large amount of research to realize that exercise is good for you. However, it may take a lot of analysis to understand what exercises are effective in your workout routine. With so many choices as to what works and what doesn't and with new “gurus” popping up everyday, it's no wonder the general public are becoming more confused by the minute.
Many people get a base workout down and just stay with that week in and week out. The problem is that the age old motto “ you can never get to much of a good thing” is not true. Doing the same exercise without variation can lead to slower and slower results, injuries, and burnout. This is one of the main reasons people quit working out.
Use variety, moderation, and consistency to keep you headed in the right direction. Setting goals that are obtainable is a great way to stay on track. Make small changes to your routine every 4 or 5 weeks and try 2 or 3 different workouts per week. Finally, every 9 to 10 weeks completely revamp your work and every 4 or 5 months take a week or so off.
There are many different ways to educate yourself on the types of exercises available for you to try. Magazines, the Internet and personal trainers seem to often be some of the best resources. Whatever you do just remember you need to switch things up and keep adding fresh and innovative techniques to keep from burning out.
