April 26, 2007 - The Tower of the Juche Idea is a stone monument erected to eternalize the Juche idea founded by President Kim Il Sung and his immortal revolutionary exploits generation after generation.
Standing on the bank of the Taedong River, it is opposite to Kim Il Sung Square in the centre of Pyongyang across the river.
On the occasion of the 70th birthday of the President it was unveiled in grand style amidst the concern of the Korean people and the world's revolutionary peoples on April 15, Juche 71 (1982).
The tower is 170 metres high. The torch of the tower alone is 20 metres high.
The facade of the pedestal has a granite panel inscribed with a paean, and both granite sides of the pedestal are adorned with stone baskets full of Kimilsungias and magnolias carved in relief. The pedestal is adorned with 70 flower-patterned feldspathic relieves and the tower body is faced with a total of 70 granite blocks to emphasize the significance of building the tower on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the President.
In front of the tower there is a trio group of worker, peasant and working intellectual who hold respectively a hammer, a sickle and a writing brush that symbolize the mark of the Workers' Party of Korea.
The trio group represents the truth that the source of the inexhaustible power of the working masses who have emerged as the masters of the world by virtue of the Juche idea lies in faithfully supporting the leadership of the working-class Party guided by the Juche idea.
The formative representation of the tower is marked by the torch symbolic of the Juche idea.
The torch looks as if burning in fierce flames. At night, too, the torch with its special lighting apparatus seems to flare up in full glare.
On either spacious side of the tower there are subsidiary sculptural groups such as "The Juche Industry", "The Bumper Harvest", "The Land of Learning", "The Impregnable Fortress", "The Longevity", "The Juche Art" that vividly represent the vitality of the Juche idea.
The back of the pedestal has a wall adorned like mosaic murals with choice stones sent by the adherents to the Juche idea in many countries of the world.
Two large fountains soaring 150 metres high can be seen in the middle of the Taedong River flowing between Kim Il Sung Square and the Tower of the Juche Idea.
