The South Camden Theatre Company Presents "The Old Settler" By John Henry Redwood

The final show run of the SCTC 3rd season starts April 25th at 8PM.

Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) April 08, 2008 - The South Camden Theatre Company, a not-for-profit theatre located in Camden, New Jersey, announces the final production of its third season. "The Old Settler" by John Henry Redwood and directed by South Camden Theatre member Theresa Devine Banford, "The Old Settler" will be performed from April 25th – May 11th, 2008. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 8PM and Sunday afternoons at 1:30 PM.

The Old Settler [is]...Redwood's gentle, sweet-natured comedy about life in Harlem in 1943. It's a play that chooses to remember the good without the bad, being about the relationship of two aging, churchgoing sisters…and what happens when a handsome young fellow, newly arrived from the Deep South, rents a room in the apartment they share...For all of its decent sentiments, The Old Settler avoids sentimentality. It has the authenticity and lack of pretense of an Early American sampler." -NY Times.

Good naturalism does more than reproduce: It listens with passion and humor, and it shapes what it hears into powerful form...The Old Settler presents the lives of two fortyish sisters...Mr. Redwood has said he modeled these sisters on his mother and aunt. It's a lovely play, moving in its pretty unsurprising central anecdote and more moving in its densely textured picture of Harlem life in 1943." -Wall Street Journal.

The South Camden Theatre Company in association with the Heart of Camden will also be breaking ground on the new 99 seat Waterfront South Theatre on April 25th at 10AM. The South Camden Theatre Company has been staging productions for over three years across the street from the site in the basement of Sacred Heart Church and plans to move its performances into the new theater in the fall of 2009.

Located at the corner of 4th and Jasper Streets in Camden New Jersey, the new building is being constructed at the site of the a former bar named "Walt's Café" an establishment previously owned by South Camden Theatre Company Artistic Director Joseph M. Paprzycki's grandparents and is the setting for his first play, "Last Rites".
