April 22, 2009 - The Cultural Center has named Dr. David Gayler as the recipient of our 2009 Honoree Award. Annual recognition of an Honoree was instituted in 1993 as a way to commend individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Charlotte County, while increasing awareness of The Cultural Center, and its benefits to the community.
In 2002, Dr. Gayler was appointed Superintendent for Charlotte County Public Schools. Dr. Gayler was, and continues to be, a man with a mission, a vision, and the passion to make the school district an exemplary part of our community. In an effort to further his mission, Dr. Gayler inquired with the public as to how they foresaw the future of our educational system, and then referred to their responses during the School District visioning process.
Since his appointment, Dr. Gayler has worked diligently to augment the technology available to students and teachers. Keeping abreast of technological advances has made our district a leading model for educational systems throughout the state. Dr. Gayler is also a strong advocate of the arts, both performing and visual, as an integral part of the educational experience.
Though the state has continued to cut funding for these programs, Dr. Gayler has maintained classes such as theater, band, chorus, graphic design, media production and visual arts for students. In addition to creative and technical needs, Dr. Gayler has heard and addressed the request for career education in our district. Career awareness programs now begin as early as Elementary School, and continue through High School.
Outside of his commitment to the School District, Dr. Gayler is an extremely active public servant. He has been a representative on the Board of Directors for several different organizations, including the YMCA, Drug Free Charlotte County, United Way, the Children’s Service Council and the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Gayler will be presented with the 2009 Honoree Award at our annual recognition banquet on Sunday May 17, 2009. Additional information is available at www.theculturalcenter.com.
