November 30, 2007 - Abu Dhabi, UAE— “Medications Safety: Global Challenges, Local Initiative”, a conference to explore the critical issues relating to public safety, institutional frameworks, legislative requirements and the role of health workers in all sectors, will be held at the Hilton Hotel on the 8th December 2007.
The seminar, which has been accredited and commended by the American Academy of Continuing Education (AACME) for 6.25 CE hours and also by Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD), will be chaired by the Medications Safety Committee of the Health Authority Abu Dhabi. It will feature keynote speakers Dr D. Pasternak, Managing Director of JCI Middle East, Dubai as well as Ms J. Fulmer Groves, Director Medication Safety, Cleveland Clinic USA.
The agenda will cover the issue from multiple perspectives including that of the patient, the physician and the health authorities. Both international and national perspectives will be presented with a strong focus on remedial action and best practice measures.
The conference will also include a presentation from Drug and Medical Product Department on Pharmacovigilence, a hot topic that will review the new developments on the national healthcare front, and the recommended nationwide approach for Pharmacovigilence.
The one day programme, organised by Synovetics, is aimed at decision makers in healthcare sector, healthcare management, medication safety officers, healthcare quality experts as well as the health professionals in the public and private hospitals provides continuing medical education (CME) hours, allowing doctors and health workers to continually upgrade their knowledge through continuing education programmes while meeting the requirements for the future renewal of their professional licenses.

The Medications Safety Committee of Health Authority has previously organized a campaign in December 2005/ January 2006 which included a one day symposium for pharmacists to launch the programme, followed by an integrated campaign that included interactive kiosks in all the public hospitals and the capital’s malls where pharmacists educated the public in areas such as poison control, proper antibiotic use, and the risks of combining homeopathic remedies and therapeutic medications.
