September 14, 2007 - Websites like ripoffreport became a target for web based marketing companies. When a company gets a bad review, someone has to jump in and fix things.
The problem is that human instinct does not make it easy for a person to pay an extortion fee for the information to go away. They would rather be able to have the information disappear and the owner of such a website get nothing. That is the sweetest revenge.
Hear it straight from the mouth of Brandon Connell, owner of a marketing company.
“Throughout the years, bad press has been a part of every business. When doing business you cannot expect to get an excellent review from every one of your customers. Some of them may have higher standards than what you tell them is realistic.
When you get a client or customer that considers themselves a public advocate, they tend to run and tell all their peers about their experience with you. Some of them may have broken a contract and are not entitled to a refund, so they exaggerate the truth or flat out lie in order to get their payback. With websites like ripoffreport, screwedcentral, scam, and others, it makes it easy to publish alot of negative information.
Ripoffreport has been a highlight out of all of these websites. Mainly because it's owner allows anyone to publish anything without proof and then refuses to delete anything no matter how ridiculous the post may be. One ripoff report has gone so far as to report an owner of a company and that owner has been dead for years! Ripoffreport refused to delete the post.
When you are dealing with these types of situations you may think there is no way to effectively fight back. You would be wrong...
Companies and individuals had to deal with their name being used by these websites and ranked in Google when you do a search. My company, RankRover, recently started offering a service to people in these situations. We get the negative information buried off of Google's first page.
While I cannot give away the golden egg (how to remove the information), I can discuss it a bit.
The key to burying this negative information is obviously to place new positive information in it's place. By manipulating the search results you effectively knock down the results you do not want to see. The process is lengthly and not for the weak.
You have to establish your brand by using someone else's brand. For example, when publishing an article you are releasing the article for other publishers to use as long as they keep your brand (or name) attached to the article. That way the new publisher is advertising your brand.
Some companies have decided to establish a new brand rather than repair their reputation for their current brand. It would simply be easier to the owner because they do not know that it can be repaired.
When faced with this situation you do have options. You can pay the $50,000 extortion fee to have the website remove the bad press, you can change your company name and register a new corporation, or you can bury the bad press and tell the owner of such a website that they haven't done anything to you to hurt your business (with an evil smile).”
