  • Hagerstown-Martinsburg, MD-WV (1888PressRelease) June 24, 2014 - The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is continuing its "Third Thursdays" event series with a hike through a section of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) known as the rock maze on July 17 at 6 p.m. The 3-mile hike will begin at the Whiskey Spring Road trailhead in Boiling Springs, PA and will follow the Trail south through the storied rock formations that give this unique section of the A.T. its name.

During the Cool Off in the Rock Maze hike, Jim Shaulis, a geologist with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, will give an overview of how the rock formations came to be and the types of rock that make up the formations, as well as background information on the geological make-up of the Cumberland Valley.

"Sharing the historical and scientific significance of some of our region's most unique natural resources is a great way to enhance how people view the Trail and provide a sense of just how varied the landscape of the Trail is along its nearly 2,180-mile span," said Karen Lutz, ATC regional director.

The ATC's Third Thursdays is a series of free, public events in the Central Pennsylvania region. The series will run through October with a different event every month.
