May 01, 2006 - (April 29th, 2006) Columbia, South Carolina – Rottweiler Basketball, Inc. announced today the formation of the Columbia Rottweilers, a new professional basketball team which has just joined the expansion line-up of the Barnes-Malone division of the ABA (American Basketball Association).
Who is the ABA?
The ABA league originally operated from 1967 to 1976 before merging with the NBA and contributing such teams as the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers to the NBA line-up. In 2000, led by the current CEO of the ABA, Joe Newman, the ABA unveiled its new plan to come back into existence after the 20 year contractual lock-out. Since 2000 the ABA has seen exponential growth and continues to grow with over 60 new teams being added for the 2006-2007 basketball season.
The Columbia Rottweilers
Beginning immediately the team is looking to recruit a head coach and two assistant coaches to lead the “Rottweilers” for the ABA 2006-2007 basketball season.
Owner/General Manager, John Wannamaker, is a native of Columbia, South Carolina by way of Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from C.A. Johnson High School in 1993 and had this to say about his Alma Mater “Columbia will always be my Alma Mater, and a city that I love. Bringing professional basketball that is fast-paced, fan friendly and affordable will certainly change the fabric of the urban youth, the city and the overall economic outlook of the state”.
The Columbia Rottweilers are in communication with local venues in order to secure the location for its proposed 30 home games.
