December 04, 2007 - The Thai economy recorded faster than expected growth in the third quarter, new data has shown.
According to figures from the government's economic think tank, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), the kingdom's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 4.9 per cent during the period.
Analysts polled by Forbes and the Bloomberg news agency had predicted growth of around 4.5 per cent and 4.4 per cent respectively.
NESDB secretary general Ampon Kittiampon attributed the performance to a rise in export volume of 27.9 per cent in October as well as an investment sector recovering after last year's military coup.
He said: 'The economy expanded faster in the third quarter than in the first and second quarters as private consumption and investment rebounded."
"The agency estimates the economy would grow by 4.5 per cent this year, with exports seen growing by 16 per cent over last year to $148.4 billion."
