October 27, 2009 - Temple University takes recycling very seriously. In calendar year 2008, Temple recycled 1,574 tons of materials. That's 3.15 million pounds diverted from a landfill, over 16,400 trees saved, 14.25 billion BTU's of energy conserved, and 1,235 tons of greenhouse gases not emitted!
Temple University's Tyler School of Arts has teamed up with New Age Blast Media® in providing their recycled glass as a raw material to re-use in the manufacturing process of New Age Blast Media®- a 100% recycled crushed glass abrasive. Under the guidance of Marshal Butin, NABM's NJ Facility has recently begun accepting shipments of recycled glass, and plan to continue their eco-friendly relationship in the future.
"Efforts by Temple University not only help save landfill space, they aid in additional resources for NABM basic materials. We are proud to be affiliated with Temple, and appreciate their go green initiative." says Stephen Mellon, sales manager.
The manufacturing process reduces the recycled bottle glass and strips the contaminants and waste by-products from the glass.
This filtered glass is then crushed into the desired sizes, screened to be sorted into different grades from course and medium and all the way down to a fine powder.
Bottle or Tri-Mix Glass is chemically known as "Amorphous Silica." It has virtually no crystalline-silica, which is commonly found in sand.
The finished product is then bagged in 50lb, 80lb, or 3,000lb super sacs and packaged for shipment!
