March 25, 2007 - This small sheet technology is called electroluminescent (EL) and it has been produced by a Chandler company called Rogers Corporation, in its Durel Division. It is an extension of the technology that is used in RAZR phones, which require the ultra thin light to allow them to be so slim. Now, flexible lamps can provide light using this same technology.
The next time you use your cellular phone, or even look at the speedometer on your car, you can know that there are pretty good odds that the technology behind their lighting is made in Chandler.
In fact, it is even Rogers product that produces the light behind the uniquely bright Timex Indiglo watches – light so bright that it guided a man leading 34 people down the darkened stairwells of the World Trade Center when it was bombed the first time in 1993.
Chandler has proudly been the source of EL technology since all the way back in 1988, but the technology’s extensive use in cellular phones has meant that the product is now being made in Suzhou, China, to be able to meet the demand.
But Rogers, like Chandler, doesn’t like to sit still too long on a single technology. It is now diversifying even as the cell phone market expands throughout India. The diversification will focus primarily on interior lighting in cars, as well as in providing EL in outdoor billboards and other advertising such as on busses and trains.
It is clear that Chandler is a city that embraces technological development. Why else would the chandler online mall
at ChandlerChamberCommunity.com be seeing such successes?
Because the city is prepared to accept and build upon technology, and aims to do so well into the future.
