May 23, 2008 - Web site for Smoky Mountains hiking trails launches video and expands trail coverage.
Louisville, Ky. – Peak hiking season in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just around the corner. To kick-off the season, HikingintheSmokys.com launched video highlights of the classic hike up Mount LeConte today. The video highlights many of the more interesting trail points along this legendary trail, including Alum Cave, the LeConte Lodge, and Gracie’s pulpit, named after the woman who hiked the trail on her 92nd birthday. The web site also posted detailed trip reports for an additional 13 trails.
The inclusion of video is unique to hiking web sites. It gives hikers the opportunity to get an in-depth view of the trail’s highlights and key features. HikingintheSmokys.com launched this new feature for the preeminent trail in the Smoky Mountains and will post video for other select trails over the next several weeks.
Trip reports for the 13 additional trails nearly doubles the number of trails previously covered in detail by the site. The new trip reports include detailed descriptions, pictures and maps for the Charlies Bunion, Andrews Bald and Alum Cave trails, among others.
HikingintheSmokys.com offers free hiking information on more than 70 trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including trail descriptions, key features, pictures, videos, maps, elevation profiles, and more. Additionally, the site is organized to make it easier for hikers to compare and choose trails that best suit their hiking preferences. Before the launch of HikingintheSmokys.com, hikers had difficulty finding web-based trail information for the Smoky Mountains. Most existing sites list only 10 or 15 of the most popular trails, and provide only limited information without regard to individual hikers’ skill level or preferences.
