April 01, 2008 - After many years of watching children fail to read using the look and guess system Robyn Dalby-Stockwell recently founded Alonah Reading Cambridge to help parents use tried and tested teaching methods.
Robyn says, “I am staggered to read that a large number of teachers and schools are holding on to methods which just don’t work. I still see 9-16 year olds taught by look and guess who can’t read at all or who have a reading age well below what it should be. These children find comprehension of any text impossible. Synthetic phonics is the only fail proof method of teaching reading in an easy and enjoyable way with comprehension developing from an early age. Parents can see progress through achievement and kids love it.”
Now with the help of Robyn and Alonah Reading Cambridge, parents everywhere can teach preschoolers to read well before they reach school and give them all the confidence they need. School age children can be taught to read at last.
Robyn says, “Look and guess may be fast but it is also sloppy and wildly unsuccessful, as has been proved - check the number of English speaking non readers world-wide.”
