June 09, 2007 - KEY WEST -- The modern age of vacation booking officially began on May 1, 2007, when sunshinekeywest.com took the Key West concierge site's first online booking. In a month’s time, the site has steamrolled forward. “A full 50% of the visitors to Key West now want to book Key West activities and attractions before they arrive,” says Marc Miclette, founder of sunshinekeywest.com. “Visitors now book everything - from electric cars and bikes to kayaking and fishing - before their vacation begins, and spend their vacation time having fun. And we are happy to help them to do that.” To commemorate the online service's successful debut, sunshinekeywest.com is making its kick-off official by bringing attention to this year's 25th Anniversary of the Battle for the Conch Republic.
Sunshinekeywest.com is giving away 250 of the 2007 25th Anniversary editions of the Conch Republic Yellow Book® phone books. Established in 1982 by secession of the Florida Keys from the United States of America, the Conch Republic was formed in response to a United States Border Patrol Blockade setup on highway U.S.1 at Florida City just to the north of the Florida Keys. Mayor Dennis Wardlow hatched a scheme to save the Key West economy. The Conch Republic was formally created, declaring its independence and war on the United States, and then immediately surrendering and applying for foreign aid. Today, the tradition of the Conch Republic revolution continues with a yearly celebration, and appointment of various Conch Ambassadors. For more information on the Conch Republic, please visit www.conchrepublic.com.
"For the past 25 years the Battle for the Conch Republic has been a source of pride and inspiration for the island of Key West, and our guests and visitors to Key West know it. While launching sunshinekeywest.com and booking Key West attractions and activities we want to do our part to spread the word about Key West. All of here at Sunshinekeywest.com want to get the word out to the everyone – that there really is a Conch Republic, and we have our own Yellow Book® Phone Book to prove it!” said Mike Nicholl, chief technological officer for Sunshinekeywest.com.
Nicholl added “To the next 250 guests who visit our website and book for Key West – be it snorkeling, bikes, scooters, electric cars, hotels, guest house, jet skis, kayaking, fishing - or even just ask about Key West and the Conch Republic, and request a 25th Anniversary Conch Republic phone book, we are going to send them a really terrific conversation piece, something that just rings Key West!”
