The two photoreactions of plants most influenced by light are the processes of photosynthesis and chlorophyll synthesis. Photosynthesis is the process of converting light into food. The green plant uses carbon dioxide, light and water to form carbohydrates, the basic food for all living organisms. Chlorophyll, the green pigment, must be present in the plant leaves, and is constantly being synthesized by the absorption of light in certain constituents of the leaf.
The efficiency of both these processes, is directly related to the wavelength of the light received and also to the intensity. Also, normal plant growth requires that the source of energy supply be a balance of red and blue light.
Our data indicates that solar radiation through multiple-glazed insulated windows using Low-E will exceed the intensity of light from a grow-lamp. Plants receive all the growing light wave length and intensity they need.
Obviously, the amount of light available to a plant is dependent on numerous variables, including placement in the room, the number and orientation of windows, and the shade caused by nearby trees, awnings, etc.
