Student Leaders To Fundraise $10,000 In 30 Days Money Will Support SMRC Projects In Rural South Africa

Describes the role of Student Movement for Real Change in student empowerment and the positive effect of enormous student fundraising in a short time for the building of schools in South Africa.

Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) November 25, 2008 - A leading social entrepreneurship organization will raise $10,000 in less than 30 days by challenging college students to get donations from their friends. The 100 Movement, a program from Student Movement for Real Change (SMRC), is looking for 100 student leaders to fundraise at least $10 from 10 friends in less than 30 days.

SMRC, an international non-profit that gives students and young professionals an opportunity to make social change in three African countries, is in the midst of the 100 Movement, its most recent fundraising campaign. The funds from the 100 Movement will be raised before Nov. 22 and will directly benefit three student-led projects. Participating students are not limited to raising $100; any student who raises more than $2,500 will be eligible to win a free trip to South Africa for spring break.

“It is our goal to empower student leaders in every capacity – be it fundraising, community organizing or gaining new knowledge about the world,” says Saul Garlick, executive director of SMRC. “The 100 Movement is an opportunity for college students to make a difference in the world, one small step at a time. The students involved with this project not only have the chance to raise essential funds for rural communities in South Africa, but they are able to educate their friends, family and peers on the need for improved health and education in these communities.”

The 100 Movement is a challenge to kick off SMRC’s Global Development Fellows’ fundraising for new projects. SMRC has chosen three college students who have developed projects for one South African village, Uta: a bakery, a scholarship foundation, and a community center. Funds from the 100 Movement will directly benefit these campaigns in 2009.

“Each student leader in the 100 Movement can select any of three projects to raise funds for,” says Garlick.

Students 18 years old or older who are enrolled in a United States university are eligible to join the 100 students leading the movement to eradicate poverty in the global south. Student Movement for Real Change (SMRC) is an international non-profit organization that works in Kenya, South Africa, Sierra Leone and the United States by empowering young people to improve health, education and leadership opportunities in neglected regions of the world. SMRC develops schools, libraries, sports fields and water sanitation solutions in developing communities worldwide. SMRC is located in Washington, DC.
