Street Art With A Past

When you think of Street Art, all sorts of images come to mind. Brightly painted sculptures or perhaps metal intertwined with futuristic designs. However when you ask about Fiberglass Street Art, one thinks of cows, horses, pigs and frogs.

(1888PressRelease) July 11, 2007 - The town of Fishers, Indiana took this concept and bent it towards it’s’ history. The Fishers Arts Council is now showcasing ten (10) fiberglass Cabooses for the summer of 2007.

Fishers, Indiana, formerly known as Fishers Station and originally as Fishers Switch, came into being in June of 1872 when Salathiel Fisher divided his land into Town lots. In those days it was common for new communities to spring up along railroads and Fishers was no exception, hence the early reference to a train station or ‘switch’.

When the newly formed Arts Council decided to develop the Street Art initiative for 2007, cabooses quickly came to mind. Why not incorporate the past into the present arts? The call went out to regional artists throughout central Indiana. Over forty (40) designs were submitted and ten were selected to represent “caBOOST the ARTS” street art for Fishers, 2007.

The ten cabooses were installed at the Fishers Train Station this past week after securing sponsorships from 10 local businesses. “Our presentation of the caboose art is drawing quite the following. People are driving by each day to see them”, said Fishers Arts Council president Walt Bagot.

The caboose-display will be through the summer months and will culminate with the Art Council's "Fishers Arts Day" on September 15, 2007. The Arts Council wants you to take a ride by viewing these great works. Hop on board while you can this summer and visit Fishers, IN. “Who knows? Besides enjoying our street art, you might learn something about our towns’ rich history”, Bagot stated.
