July 19, 2007 - Colgate-Palmolive Corporation on Thursday, warned retailer stores about some “dollar-type discount stores” located anywhere in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York selling fake toothpaste. This counterfeit toothpaste is noted of containing chemical that is toxic and could be dangerous to anyone who chanced upon using it. Thereby, the Family Dollar store managed by Larry Cramer assured Pennsylvanians that they do not have any stocks of phony and dangerous toothpaste that is labeled “made in South Africa.”
Mr. Cramer claims that he had never sold any kind of recalled product in all his 8½ years of managing the Family Dollar stores. He also handles the Charlotte, a North Carolina based chain’s store in 701 Prescott Avenue. He found out about the poisonous and fake Colgate toothpaste early on Thursday morning through the e-mail services of their company.
The toxic toothpaste was reputed to have ingredients like diethylene glycol, which is an industrial solvent usually present in antifreeze. This is used as a cheap equivalent of a sweetener glycerin for the fake toothpaste and other drugs coming from China.
The recall issued on June 11 was given after the substance was discovered to be present in Shir, Chinese toothpaste.
Where this present group of fake toothpaste originated, is not yet known. However, the Colgate-Palmolive company gave a statement on that day with the following content:
“Colgate does not import toothpaste into the United States from South Africa. The counterfeit toothpaste is not manufactured or distributed by Colgate and has no connection with the company whatsoever.”
It is uncertain whether there were consumers who have been victimized by the fake toothpaste but all the retailer stores, especially dollar stores were alerted to be on guard of the hazardous product.
They were told to look out for tubes of toxic toothpaste weighing five ounces with packages that often have misspellings like “SOUTH AFRLCA”, “South African Dental Assoxiation” and “isclinically.”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have already begun stopping imports of toothpaste from China. They have also started to search retailer’s shelves starting June 11 after the recall about the Shir toothpaste. It was announced that the fake Colgate toothpaste was found on some discount retailer’s shelves where the Chinese-made toothpaste are usually sold.
