October 31, 2008 - Stephen Larsen, PhD, award-winning author and Psychology Professor Emeritus at SUNY Ulster, New York, will be a featured speaker and panelist at The NorthEast Regional Biofeedback Conference, Sunday, November 2, 2008, at Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center, 178 Ryders Lane, New Brunswick, N.J., from 9:30 am to noon, and from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. His morning topic is “The LENS EEG Method” and he will focus on some of the ideas put forth in his book The Healing Power of Neurofeedback.
LENS (low energy neurofeedback system) is considered a revolutionary technique for mental health care as it restores optimal brain function. The LENS technique was invented by Larsen’s mentor and colleague, Dr. Len Ochs, to whom Larsen’s book is dedicated.
The Northeast Regional Biofeedback Society is an organization of psychologists, mental health counselors, psychiatrists, nurses, physical rehabilitation specialists, dentists, educators, and members of other allied profession who are biofeedback practitioners. Biofeedback is an increasingly important medical and psychological treatment modality and neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that measures and trains brain waves. Biofeedback was introduced in the 1960’s, and has steadily gained recognition as a bio-behaviorial, non-drug intervention treatment for a wide variety of illnesses. The society produces bi-annual conferences, and publishes an e-newsletter at nrbs.org.
When Dr. Larsen was on the faculty at Ulster, 1968-1996, he directed a program in consciousness studies and biofeedback that gave students a hands-on opportunity to train themselves plus research the health benefits of biofeedback. In 1990 he opened Stone Mountain Counseling, PC, for psychotherapy, biofeedback and training where he continues to serve as its director.
In addition to The Fundamentalist Mind, Dr. Larsen wrote The Shaman’s Doorway, the Mythic Imagination. With his wife Robin he co-authored, A Fire in the Mind: The Life of Joseph Campbell. Larsen was a Joseph Campbell friend and protégé. In 2006 The Healing Power of Neurofeedback: The Revolutionary LENS Method for Restoring Optimal Brain Function was published.
