August 29, 2007 - We all struggle with temptation. Far too many of us are succumbing to the same one: to spend more than we can afford.
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
—Matthew 6:24
We are a nation in debt; countless families are struggling to serve God and still pay the bills, and far too many of them are failing at one or both. Total consumer debt hit $2.2 trillion in 2005. Average household credit card debt skyrocketed 167 percent between 1990 and 2004. Some studies show the average household carries $8,000 in credit card debt alone.
But Taffy Wagner, DMin, has a new plan to offer both hope and real strategies for getting on top of that debt.
“For too many people, their debt load is so overwhelming, they don’t know where to begin and they’re overwhelmed at the thought of even trying to get that debt under control,” she said. “But I’ve come up with a program that’s a not just a financial strategy, it’s a whole new outlook on life.”
The program also addresses another common Christian struggle: coming to terms with pride. Wagner points students back to the Bible, specifically Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
“We pride ourselves on our salaries, our positions in the community, the size of our homes and other material trappings,” she said. “But pride is one of the main reasons we stay in debt. Too many times that’s just covering for insecurity and a mismanaged financial house. I’m reaching out to people to take the stigma away from money issues and form real solutions to improve not just the bottom line, but their lives overall.”
Stair Step Your Way Out of Debt and its prerequisite, The Debt Stops Here, combine the basics of personal finance and planning with common sense, faith and realistic goals. Wagner teaches a seminar and offers audio tapes for home study. It’s a model based on Wagner’s own experiences of getting too far into debt, then digging her way out.
“I was raised by a single mom who worked constantly but lived paycheck to paycheck. When I became an adult, I had no real training on managing money, like so many other young men and women. That landed me in serious debt,” she said. “I know how easy it is to get in and how hard it is to get out.”
Wagner has taken those tough financial and life lessons and turned them into a series of workshops and audio tapes that give clear instructions on taking back your life, stepping up your service to God and paying off your debt.
Students relate to Wagner’s real-world experience and practical approach. For some, the lessons took effect almost instantly.
“I felt an immediate change,” said Bettye Jamerson, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Change-A-Life Foundation. “Once I listened to the audios in The Debt Stops Here package, every gap that needed to be filled was filled. Then immediate manifestation began to happen.”
