Millions of people each year receive solicitations online and in person that can put them at risk of identity theft, a crime which can cost consumers billions of dollars in aggregate. A critical piece of any identity thief's strategy is procuring the social security number of the victim.
Unfortunately, relatively few consumers really understand the nature of their social security numbers: who issues them, how they are selected, and what mechanisms exist to protect them from criminals.
"We've found that many, many people are underinformed about the strategies out there for securing this critical piece of information," said site founder Scott Hamilton. "We wanted to create a great resource to give them more information and power to protect themselves."
