November 16, 2008 - The additional problems which families face can cause almost as much consternation and distress as the child's condition itself. Wouldn't it be nice if parents could simply email someone and receive practical advice and support from someone who is experienced, qualified and friendly?
Snowdrop can help in the following areas: -
Education. (UK only)
Are you being pressurised into sending your child to school when you know it would be the wrong decision for him?
Are you concerned about the process of 'educational statementing' and what it all means?
Do you believe your child needs to be in a mainstream classroom, but can't get the professionals to see it your way?
Are you concerned about a report written by a professional and want to challenge it?
Are you concerned about something that is happening at school but don't know how to go about challenging it?
Is there some other aspect of your child's education which you are worried about?
Reference to expert legal advice. (UK and US only)
Do you believe that your child's problems have been caused by medical negligence, but not know how to go about finding help?
Do you want to see your child's medical records but are unsure of how to gain access to them?
Do you want a legal opinion from a specialist medical negligence lawyer?
We can point you in the right direction.
Dealing with professionals.
Dealing with health professionals can be one of the most frustrating, anxiety producing situations any parent can imagine. There are many wonderful and kind health professionals who do their best to help families, but we have all sat opposite the arrogant, opinionated, prejudiced and egotistical individuals who, instead of helping families, make their life a misery. We give practical advice on how to successfully deal with these individuals. Don't put up with it any more!
Reaction to the diagnosis and adjusting to your child's problems.
When the diagnosis of a child's disability is given to parents, one would think it would be done gently, tactfully and with kindness. One would imagine that both parents would be together and that the diagnosis would be delivered in a warm, hospitable and caring environment and that parents would be given immediate access to information and support. Unfortunately, as study after study highlights, this is rarely the case, with parents facing the nightmare of having their child's condition diagnosed by people who are trained to be 'cold, calculating clinicians.' As a consequence, disclosure of diagnosis is usually tactless and brutal, leaving parents in a state of confusion and distress. We can help by providing immediate support and clear information.
Similarly, you might be experiencing difficulty with adjusting and accepting your child's problems, but feel reluctant to share your concerns with a health professional or social worker. Talk to us and we can help to guide you through this emotional minefield, through to a clear understanding of the difficulties your child faces and the emotional problems you are experiencing. We never judge! We always listen.
Benefits and Grants (UK only)
Families of children with disabilities are entitled to a range of benefits and grants in order to help them cope with the incredible financial costs of caring for their children. Are you receiving everything you are entitled to?
Stress and anxiety
Do you feel overly stressed? Do you fear for the future? Children who experience developmental difficulties, some of whom cannot sleep, suffer epileptic attacks, have behavioural issues, display socialisation difficulties, cannot communicate and have toileting, feeding and other practical problems are not going to produce calm placid parents! If this describes you and you feel the need to talk, we are there to listen!
