February 20, 2008 - As best-selling author Walter Mosley—the face of this year’s Small Press Month poster—states: "The life's blood of contemporary and modern literature is in the custodianship of so-called small publishers. Without them there is no future for literature."
Small Press Month is a nationwide promotion highlighting the valuable work of independent publishers. From March 1-March 31, a string of independent, literary events will take place from coast-to-coast, featuring readings by authors including Walter Mosley, Bill Henderson, Tess Harper, Rae Dawn Chong, Mike Farrell, Eileen Myles, Hatti Gossett, Steve Katz, and many more.
This month long series kicks off on March 6th at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York, City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, and Woodland Pattern Book Center in Milwaukee; culminating with events at New York’s Symphony Space, Portland’s Powell’s City of Books, Virginia’s Festival of the Book and WordTheatre in Los Angeles.
Small Press Month is co-sponsored by The New York Center for Independent Publishing (NYCIP), the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP), and PMA, The Independent Book Publishers Association, with additional sponsorship from American Booksellers Association/Book Sense (ABA), Small Press Distribution (SPD), Reed Exposition Services (BookExpo America), Association of American Publishers (AAP), Selfpublishing.com, Ingram Publisher Services, The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, and others. Special thanks to ForeWord magazine for their generous support of Small Press Month.
