September 06, 2007 - As a single parent, Jen Canseco, has often encountered the struggles that come along with the job. Often having been frustrated by the lack of assistance to single parents, she has decided to take it into her own hands to make a difference. “It’s time for single parents to help each other” says Jen.
She posted an ad on the popular classified listing site, craigslist.org, offering her web design services at a drastically discounted rate to other single parents. “I figured that there must be plenty of other single parents like myself who would like start their own small business. I know from experience that its not easy to start a business, and one of the biggest costs with a new business is website design. So with this discounted website program, it puts them a step closer to that goal.”
Her ad encourages that all single parents should work together and assist each other, and that the requirement for taking part of her discounted website service, is that they offer a service they can provide to other single parents at discounted rates as well. And she isn’t stopping there. She’s designing a website that will promote this new idea to single parents across the country.
“There is relatively little assistance dedicated to single parents that are struggling. From finances, to not enough time with the kids, to custody battles and deadbeat parents it can be one of the most difficult jobs to raise children as a single parent. I’ve known for the last year that there needs to be a better support system for single parents, but I wasn’t sure how to go about doing that. Then one late night, I thought why not get single parents to help each other in some way or another. And the first thing I thought of that I could do to help, was my web design skills,” states Jen, who owns and runs JM Dragon Consulting.
She’s had several responses to her ad on craigslist already, including several single parents who although don’t need her web design services, were eager to be a part of the idea. “It’s exciting to see other single parents realize the value of this concept and jump on the bandwagon,” exclaims Jen, “it just encourages me that I’m making a difference in some small way.”
The website, singleparentshelpingsingleparents.com will be up and ready to go by mid September. The site will include a services listing section, support forum, and much more. Jen hopes that the site will become a big enough success to turn the idea into a non-profit organization that can offer additional assistance to single parents going through rough times.
