August 08, 2008 - Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, (AYJNIHH) Mumbai is celebrating its 25th Anniversary, on 8th August’08. The celebrations will be inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri K.M. Acharya, Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, New Delhi at 11.00am in a function to be held at Rang Sharda Natya Mandir, in Bandra Reclamation. During the inaugural function he will launch the Disability Information Line (an IVRS based telephonically accessible information service) catering to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
This will be followed by a technical presentation by the Guest of Honor, Dr. Parasuraman, Director, Tata Institute for Social Science (TISS) Mumbai, honoring of successful hearing impaired persons in web based web designing course of NTID, Rochester and AYJNIHH, Gold medalists of various rehabilitation courses of the Institute honoring of institute staff who have completed 10 & 20 years of service, etc.
On 9th August 1983, what was then called the “Ministry of Welfare” established, with endorsement from Government of India, the “Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped” at Bandra East in Mumbai. Later the Institute was housed in the new building in Bandra west in the Reclamation area. Today the AYJNIHH has grown to the status of International standards and also has acquired ISO: 2000-1991 certifications in terms of quality services and manpower development.
During its 25 year period of service to the nation, the Institute continuously searched for the integral approach that persons with hearing impairment require to achieve development in various spheres of life. In doing so, it established strategic alliances with regional, national and international level institutes, in pursuance to its mandates with the approval of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
This Institute is a pioneer in the design of education of infants & children with hearing impairment. Technical growth in early identification and intervention of persons with hearing impairment received its social dimension through its Disability Information Line (DIL) Digital divide for the persons with hearing impairment have been reduced through, institute’s internet based services on jobs for the deaf & hearing assessment & referral service through the website of the institute :www.ayjnihh.nic.in
The 25th anniversary celebrations will be marked by both cultural and technical activities. A National meet on ‘Inner Ear chemistry’, is being planned in this Silver Jubilee year among various other activities. This meet is aimed to achieve break through in the treatment of Sensori-neural hearing Impairment, through advancement in molecular biology and nanotechnology. The vision to upgrade institute and its activities for facilitating quality services for hearing impaired in the country will be taken up, in this Silver Jubilee year.
