October 08, 2008 - Becoming efficient in music sight reading is an important skill for every piano player. It takes lot of practice and exercises to perfect this skill. We all know that learning a language takes years of formal education; well, in the same way, learning to sight read takes many years of music lessons.
Harmony & Melody Studio Inc, a leading online piano lesson company, recently launched an invaluable tool for pianists – Mastering the Art of Piano Sight Reading piano course. This new course comes with a 60-minute DVD, a CD-rom with hundreds of exercises, and a binder with sheet music exercises ranging from beginning to advanced levels. The course also comes with an additional DVD entitled, “Advanced Sight Reading Techniques.”
In order to improve in sight reading, one needs to work on the exercises on a daily basis. Establishing skills and correct methods of practice are essential to do right from the beginning. Many piano players have established poor habits early on, making it very difficult to “unlearn” them. “Very often, piano players glance back and forth from the book to the keys when reading pieces. This is an incorrect way of sight reading,” says Yoke Wong, founder of Harmony & Melody Studio Inc.
She also mentions that learning to sight read is sometimes similar to learning to type, with eyes always on the text. Occasionally, eyes can glance towards the keys, but it must always be with a quick motion. Sometimes, peripheral vision is used to aid in sight reading as well. Once routine and good habits are established, this process becomes much easier.
Musical patterns and forms are helpful tools for analyzing musical pieces. A good understanding of harmony and theory are also essentials tool to master sight reading.
