August 24, 2007 - Continuing a 12-year decline, the U.S. birth rate dropped to the lowest level since national data have been available. Are we failing our future? If Michael Moore is right, our healthcare system has already failed several generations of Americans. Those who watched SICKO, probably remember American healthcare horror stories. For those who did not see the documentary, I would not want to spoil the bolt from the blue, all I can say is that Cuban health professionals are actually more capable and willing to help U.S. citizens than our own doctors in the United States, and that Guantanamo Bay residents, or suspected terrorists, receiving far better healthcare than average American.
Are we on the way to extinction? What would America look like 100 years from now? In order to answer these questions, we do not need more documentaries on the subject. We must ensure that birth rate increases, and that mothers to be provided with adequate insurance as well as access to prenatal care.
We should learn from countries like Russia that introduced new government program providing financial assistance to new mothers. The assistance package is so significant, it is nearly enough to buy a one-bedroom condominium. So, why are we behind?
Another shameful verity is that according to Reuters U.S. hospitals are charging uninsured patients about two-and-a-half times more than those with health insurance, a mark-up that has been steadily rising despite pressure to level prices.

It may be a good first step in finding solution to a complex social issue that may cost us our future.
