Shridhar University Pilani Rajasthan Students Takeup Voluntary Blood Donation As A Mission With Passion

Top Quote The only way out to manage the Blood Bank shortage crisis in summer months is to encourage more and more youth to come forward for voluntary blood donation on a regular basis. What is required is a new generation of idealistic and motivated voluntary unpaid blood donors who will form a pool that provides the safest blood possible for use wherever and whenever it is needed to save life. • (1888PressRelease) April 12, 2011 - It is an irony that despite nation with a billion population, against an annual requirement of 8 million units of blood, India is able to collect only 5.6 million units of which only about 3 million units are from voluntary blood donors.

Donation of Blood is a gesture of Goodwill and Care for the fellow human beings. There is no Gift more valuable than this, as it is actually a gift of life for the person who receives it. Blood is replaceable but a life is not. Access to safe blood is a key component of effective health care and voluntary donors are the cornerstone of a safe blood supply.

India has just about 4 voluntary blood donors per 1000 population as against 70 in Japan and 113 in Switzerland. It is expected in general that about 1-3% of a country's population should donate blood voluntarily to meet the entire demands of the country.

Every summer, major hospitals in various cities and towns across the country face a different kind of drought. With blood donation camps dwindling up owing to summer vacations, most hospitals turn to relatives of patients to replenish the supply. The case is no different with other blood banks both in urban and rural areas.

The demand for whole blood including the components red cells, platelets, plasma and white cells normally doubles up everywhere during the summer months as the number of elective surgeries go up several times during summer months and considering that in cases where surgery can be rescheduled, most invariably prefer to have it done during the summer as schools are closed and they need not have to take time off from work or upset their children's class schedules.

It is known that about 85% of donors are from educational institutions and during summer months with students busy with scheduled examinations as well as online - offline entrance tests for new admissions coupled with peaking holiday mood, hospitals and blood banks indeed face tough times.

Students of Way to Transform Shridhar University Pilani have been regularly doing voluntary blood donation on milestone dates such as June 14 World Blood Donor Day, October 1 National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, etc. April 10th has a place in history for various reasons such as birthday of Joseph Pulitzer (1847), Shri GD Birla (1894) etc but what prompted a group of students and faculty of the University on this date was a SOS summer drought call from Dr Pradip K Jain who heads the Blood Bank of the Birla Sarvajanik Hospital Pilani.

On April 10, 2011, urging the students and faculty of the Shridhar University to take up Voluntary Blood Donation as a Mission with Passion, Prof BR Natarajan Pro Vice Chancellor flagged off a team of students led by Prof Bir Singh and Warden Mr Pankaj M for the noble cause.
