Shorepower Technologies To Develop Electrical Control For Trailer Refrigeration Units

NYSERDA-Funded Project to Lower Peak Demand While Reducing Air and Noise Pollution.

Utica-Rome, NY (1888PressRelease) May 13, 2008 - Shorepower Technologies today announced that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded them a $446,000 cost-shared contract to design and develop a central demand-side management (DSM) control system for conventional diesel trailer refrigeration units (TRUs) while on electric standby, and for the hybrid electric trailer refrigeration units (eTRUs). This system will reduce standby service electricity demand requirements, diesel engine noise and air pollution, and overall fleet operating costs. Monitoring and measuring refrigeration requirements of an entire fleet of plugged-in trailers will be accomplished through wireless global positioning satellite (GPS) data and individual unit control instructions are returned through the plug-in pedestal system located at parking stalls.

For fleets transporting perishable and frozen goods, eTRUs and TRUs on electric standby improve environmental conditions for both drivers and the local community by not idling diesel engines while parked. Additionally, with their centrally controlled efficiency, multiple trailer units plugged in at truck stops or warehouse terminals can reduce their electric demand, thereby avoiding expensive electrical service upgrades and utility demand surcharges. This project will also directly quantify the economic and environmental benefits of electric standby TRU systems.

Major partners in the NYSERDA project include the New York State Department of Correctional Services’ (NYS DOCS) Office of Nutritional Services Food Production Center, Carrier Transicold, New West Technologies, LLC, PAR Logistics Management Systems, and Rochester Gas and Electric. The pre-commercial DSM system will be installed at the NYS DOCS Office of Nutritional Services Food Production Center, at the Oneida Correctional Facility in Rome, NY. This is the central food preparation facility for 73 locations, including the entire NY State Prison system and several additional sites. Currently, it features the Carrier-Transicold Ultra XL electric standby TRUs, which have the ability to plug into grid power when idle.

New West Technologies, LLC will be assisting Shorepower Technologies in the engineering and management of the new DSM system, as well as analyzing the data collected by the PAR Logistics Management Systems GPS devices. These GPS units will be retrofitted to the TRUs and will wirelessly monitor and compile real-time data, including trailer status, location, temperature, fuel levels, battery charge, and operating history. Utility partners will be involved in evaluating the load impact on their electrical distribution operations resulting from this activity.

NYSERDA Acting President and CEO Robert G. Callender noted that: “This project is a prime example of how NYSERDA is exploring and funding ways to reduce electric usage, air and noise pollution, and lower operating costs for government and businesses in New York. That we are able to cooperate with a New York manufacturer and our Corrections System in the demonstration phase benefits all New Yorkers and we look forward to gathering the promising data from this project.”

Mr. Brian Fischer, Commissioner, New York State Department of Correctional Services commented that: "The job of transporting nearly a quarter of a million pounds of food per day to inmates in correctional facilities from one end of New York State to the other is an energy-intensive one. We are pleased to partner with the private sector and NYSERDA to save money and cut air and noise pollution in the process, especially as we look to expand our Food Production Center operations to supply meals to county jail inmates across the State. This is a win all the way around: it helps the environment, eases the burden on taxpayers and demonstrates how forward thinking and cooperation between the public and private sectors can make government work better, smarter and more efficiently."
