Chair of the EU's Environment Committee calls for increased regulation on the exploitation of shale gas in order to combat negative environmental impacts.

The need for energy security and independence has focused attention on Europe's huge shale gas deposits but growing concerns over the controversial extraction process and the subsequent impact that this has on the environment are beginning to overshadow the benefits.

Jo Leinan MEP, Chair of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament has called for a new European directive to rigorously regulate the production of fuels with adverse environmental impacts which could potentially lead to the banning of shale gas exploration.

SMi Group's inaugural Shale Gas Environmental Summit will investigate the environmental issues surrounding the extraction of shale gas and aims to establish a dialogue between the key stakeholders. The conference will engage with legal professionals who will be addressing legislation governing Europe and from experienced technology companies on best practice, solutions and the hydro-social challenge. Experts will also scrutinise the economic benefits of shale gas extraction and the trade off between energy security and damage to the environment.

The speaker line-up includes Philip Lowe, Director General for Energy at the European Commission who will explore Europe's perspective on conventional and unconventional gas and the current stance of the European Union's member states and Karim Essemiani, Business Development Manager at Veolia Water will examine the water management issues and solutions in shale gas E&P.

The Shale Gas Environmental Summit will take place on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd November at the Copthorne Tara Hotel in London.
