September 02, 2008 - September is International Update Your Resume Month, an event created by Career Directors International (CDI). During the month, everyone is encouraged to review and update their resumes to reflect their professional accomplishments.
The purpose of International Update Your Resume Month is to encourage everyone to take a more active role in managing his or her career. People often wait until they are in the job market to take time to update their resumes. “Proactively updating your resume is a much easier task than waiting until you are in the job market, “offers Karen Swim, President of Words For Hire. “Routinely adding recent accomplishments to your resume will ensure that you have key details that may be forgotten years later.”
Keeping a record of projects, challenges solved and skills gained also has value for your current role. “Keeping records of your own job performance will keep you on track to achieving your annual and/or bonus objectives. It also makes the annual review process less stressful because you are essentially prepared for it in advance. “ says Swim.
Your resume is a record of your work history and achievements. Whether or not you plan to look for a job, it is important to document your career milestones and accomplishments. Swim sums it up in this way, “Great careers do not simply happen but are carefully cultivated and managed. Your resume not only documents what you have done but where you are headed.”
