June 03, 2009 - Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that continues to affect many people around the world, more particularly women. This psychological condition, which constitutes binge eating and forcibly purging what has been eaten, ensues emotional distress – depression, guilt and self-condemnation, which are then followed by physical problems such as dehydration, malnutrition and organ failure.
What is interesting to note is that bulimia can also cause teeth erosion, a result from the stomach acids that are used in purging. In fact, about 26% of all bulimia cases is first diagnosed by a dentist.
This was what author and Doctor Brian McKay learned following the frequency of his patients showing symptoms of bulimia through dental visits. As a result, McKay self-published his findings in the book, Bulimia is a Dental Disease.

About the Author
Dr. Brian McKay graduated from the University Of Southern California School Of Dentistry. Not content with having one of the biggest and most successful dental practices in Northwest California, he came up with a new concept in dentistry, that of a personalized, cosmetic dental practice.
From that concept, he encountered patients with eating disorders, many of which showed symptoms of bulimia. After consulting with eating disorder specialists and treatment practitioners in the Northwest and Southwest California, he then developed his own unique approach to treating patients with eating disorders.
Dr. McKay also received recognition as founding faculty member, lecturer and leader of the Pacific Aesthetic Continuum, a premier post-graduate school for cosmetic dentistry at the University of the Pacific Dental School in San Francisco.
