Now that the building, which once held CBGB is a clothing store that sells $100 t-shirts, it might seem the Bowery has lost all its rock 'n' roll points, prompting disaffected suburban youths everywhere to look elsewhere for role models. Thankfully, the famously debauched thoroughfare still boasts a tiny sliver of coolness: At the Bowery Poetry Club, D.I.Y. musicians are singing the praises of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll with tunes that will make you get up and dance, get up and start a revolution or get down and fuck. At Theater of Fools, Bowery's monthly music showcase, artists choose substance over style, providing a breath of fresh "less-lame era" to anyone who feels they will gouge their eyes and ears out if forced to witness another crappy hipster band who may have sold their souls to Satan but forgot to ask for musical talent in return.
The main acts at Theater of Fools: Sean T. Hanratty (an art-throb with the voice of an angel who smokes fifteen packs of Camel unfiltered a day) and The Fools (a female duet who've had more bras hurled at them than Tom Jones) are joined by their equally talented friends. Bands like the New York Howl, Schwervon!, Jason Trachtenberg, the Wowz, Ching Chong Song, I Love You Airlines, Ursa Minor, and the Purple Organ have all graced the Bowery Stage for Theater of Fools. The night is hosted by two-time Mr. Lower East Side, Moonshine Shorey, who gives out free raffle prizes and drink specials all night long. And the audience, comprised largely of Downtown's dwindling population of freaks, is a show in and of itself. Best of all, the whole goddamned thing is FREE.
