(1888PressRelease) September 11, 2006 - Nick Helms, a student at the Myrtle Beach campus of San Diego Golf Academy, recently appeared in “Golf Plus,” a section of Sports Illustrated Online. In the article, the SDGA student discussed the pain of losing his father, who was killed in a mining accident earlier this year, and how pursuing his dream of being a professional golfer honors his father's memory.

Terry Helms, who had worked as a coal miner for 35 years, was killed in a mining accident in early January of 2006. On January 2, an explosion killed Terry Helms and 11 other miners in the Sago Mine, located in West Virginia, where Helms was a fire boss. Despite the fact that mining is one of the few jobs that provides a respectable income to workers in the area, the senior Helms knew the dangers involved, and strived to protect his son by steering him away from a life as a miner. Instead, Nick Helms was encouraged to enroll in SDGA-Myrtle Beach, a local golf school, and pursue the education that would help him get the golf job of his dreams.

Although Nick Helms was interviewed for numerous news articles following the tragic mining accident, the article in Sports Illustrated Online was his first chance to discuss the impact his father's death had on his plans for the future. The article about this SDGA student appeared on the Sports Illustrated website on June 14, 2006.
