Scottish Water Goes For A Better Barrier

Scottish Water has now adopted the Protecta-Line barrier pipe system for brownfield applications.

(1888PressRelease) May 02, 2009 - Manufacturer GPS PE Pipe Systems was successful in securing a framework supply contract after Scottish Water assessed competitive products.

Protecta-Line was considered the best and most cost effective solution to protect drinking water supplies in contaminated land situations. Already Protecta-Line pipes and fittings have been installed in several urban projects within Scottish Water’s operational area, including new housing and industrial, offices and public sector brownfield developments.

The framework contract covers pipe sizes up to and including 180mm and GPS is hopeful that its new, larger diameters, up to 355mm, will be added to the Protecta-Line contract.

Until it changed policy in April 2008 Scottish Water employed only wrapped ductile iron and coated copper pipe in contaminated land applications. In comparison to metals the advantages of Protecta-Line, as a WRAS and DWI-approved polyethylene barrier pipe system, include greater longevity, flexibility and easier handling. There are also four optional pipe jointing methods - electrofusion and butt fusion jointing, mechanical compression and fluid compression couplers.

Preventing tainting of potable water by contaminants remaining in the ground, Protecta-line has proved to be the most comprehensive barrier pipe system in the UK. It is now 11 years since it was introduced and last year the system received Kitemark approval to WIS 4-32-19, the new industry standard for barrier pipe systems.

GPS PE Pipe Systems specialises in the design, development, manufacture and marketing of polyethylene pipe systems for the gas, water, sewerage and industrial markets.
