December 26, 2008 - Stated Corey Berman, founder member of Green Students Fundraising says, “When Green Students was founded, I was told about vampire power. Vampire power is when an appliance is plugged in but not in use. This can be a microwave which has a clock, a computer, a TV, or just about any appliance one uses. This power can account for up to 30% of the electricity when the appliance is in normal use. Although annoying, I have begun to unplug items, like my TV and blender. How do you cut back on energy? What other options are available to help cut back on vampire power use?”
Green living is not only about using environmentally safe products, but it is a lifestyle intended to ensure that one’s impact on the environment is as minimal or as positive as possible. Since school fundraising activities involve both children and parents, it is the best way to educate them regarding green living.
The organization does it with the aid of their wide range of products and informational DVD. Their products include stainless steel water bottles, dryerballs, greeting cards infused with seeds for planting, organic lip balm, and recyclable gift bags.
The organization's stainless steel water bottles are a perfect replacement for plastic bottles. Plastic is made from petroleum-based chemicals and has an adverse impact on the environment. Same is the case with cosmetics and other home and gift items.
Green Students fundraising programs offer an educational component as well. Students can learn how to live a greener lifestyle, while selling environmentally friendly products at the same time. Nowadays, many schools aim to make their students more aware about various environmental issues. Schools throughout Canada and the United States are on board with green fundraising. With renewed interest in the environment and programs dedicated to eco-friendly practices and behaviors, schools look at green school fundraising as an opportunity to teach their children the importance of environmental accountability.
Green Students Fundraising was established in the year 2007 with an aim to ingrain the concept of green living in the minds of students from a young age. Started by two university students, the organization has scaled new heights of success in the span of a year. This is evident from the fact that Toronto District School Board, District School Board of Niagara and Upper Grand District School Board are amongst its approving authorities.
