November 15, 2007 - Scalamandre, the doyen company of American silks and satins, will present an Internet auction of fine fabrics and trims, wall papers, rugs, furniture, lighting, and weaving artifacts from their original mill in Long Island City, NY.
The auction preview is posted on line at http://gallery.lldspecialtysales.com/. The bidding begins on November 24 and the auction closes Saturday, December 1. Register to bid in the auction at www.antiquesyes.com.
“We are thinning out our Long Island warehouse,” explains Bob Bidder, grandson of Franco Scalamandre and now CEO of the 75 year old firm. “We’ve always had a policy of holding onto extra production, but its time for a major inventory overhaul.”
“We’re also consolidating our offices in New York,” Bitter continues, “so we’ll be selling furniture and fixtures from our original Third Avenue showroom.”
Among the auction highlights are archival fabrics. These designs were woven for historic restorations and special pieces collected over the years for studies in weaving techniques and design inspiration.
Also offered in this auction are large quantities more than 50 different specially turned wooden tassel forms that the Scalamandre trim department would wind with fine silk thread and turn into exquisite decoration for draperies and elaborate furniture.
Among the fabrics that will be sold to the highest bidder are silk and blended damasks, beautiful lampas weaves, and fine prints created in the old Scalamandre silk screen department.
Interesting artifacts include a late 19th. Century Asian Icat, a spinning wheel and a yarn winding machine, both from the late 1700s, and a superb example of mid 19th Century American wool work, framed in a period shadowbox. Also for sale to the highest bidder are wall papers that were made by hand in the Long Island City mill, as well as some of the original silk screens used in the printing process.
