San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease)
January 03, 2009 - San Diego’s indoor soccer league is back: The San Diego Sockers, a ten time champion league team that folded in 2004, announced yesterday that the 2009-2010 team will play at the Del Mar Arena.
"They're the most successful indoor soccer team in history," Paul Blaney, the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Arena manager said, referring to the championships the team won in the Major Indoor Soccer League and the North American Soccer League.
Local entrepreneur David Pike, who purchased the San Diego Sockers in August with colleague Carl Savoia, adds, “I really enjoy San Diego sports teams in general and wanted to give back to the community. The Del Mar Arena is a great facility to re-launch the team brand.”
Now playing for the Premier Arena Soccer League, which has 54 teams in 10 divisions across the United States, the San Diego Sockers will host six games in the later half of 2009 at the Del Mar Arena.
Savoia says, “The feeling is pure excitement. We haven’t even officially announced the team and we already have fans emailing asking us for San Diego Sockers clothing, asking about season tickets, telling us how thrilled they are we are bringing their team back. That in itself gives us a feeling of pride, excitement, and a sense of that we have done something great here.”
The Del Mar Arena is undergoing a $14 million facelift and will be completed by March of 2009.
