  • San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) February 04, 2012 - Renowned local artists, People with Alzheimer's, caregivers and generous donors gathered Thursday at the Vi at La Jolla Village to celebrate the art of creative expression at The Alzheimer's Association San Diego Chapter's "Memories in the Making" Artist Tea and Reception, which helped to shed light on a disease affecting more than 150,000 caregivers and affected individuals in San Diego and Imperial Counties.

People with Alzheimer's from assisted living centers across the county congregated in La Jolla to connect, dance to live music and sip tea in celebration of art, life and hope. The hugely successful event showcased over 35 beautiful and inspirational works by individuals living with the disease. Some pieces were paired with a complementary piece by fifteen San Diego professional artists and will be auctioned together during the Alzheimer's Association's upcoming annual fundraising event - "Memories in the Making" Art Auction at the San Diego Natural History Museum on March 23rd at 6:00 PM. San Diego and regional artists including Patrick Carney of Carlsbad, Robert Verhees, Hye Joung Tibby, Karla Leopold of Del Mar, and Luz Camacho Espinoza of San Ysidro were among those featured at the Artist Tea.

Twenty-five stand-alone paintings will also be part of the upcoming Art Auction event. Also featured in the auction are 60 palettes created by local city artists. All proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer's Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter.

"The incredible artwork that has been created is a testament to the 'Memories in the Making Program' and the catharsis that artistic expression brings to those who are often unable to express themselves verbally. Those living with dementia, who may be disconnecting from the world around them, are suddenly brought back by a discussion of a painting or a cue from an art topic that triggers a memory of a past experience." said Mary Ball, President/CEO of the Alzheimer's Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter. Fifteen local artists selected a painting created by an individual with dementia that inspired them to create a complimentary piece to be paired with the painting.

Memories in the Making art classes are held at 24 locations throughout San Diego County for the benefit of people with Alzheimer's, many of whom no longer speak or have never before picked up a paint brush until now.

Tickets to the Art Auction are $175 and include gourmet food and fine wines. For more information and to purchase tickets to the Memories in the Making Art Auction, please visit www.alz.org/SanDiego or call 858.492.4400.
