March 25, 2009 - The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) has re-appointed Mr. Sajan Poovayya as the Chairman of the Karnataka State Council of FICCI, for the period 2009 – 2010.
Mr. Sajan Poovayya has been an active member of FICCI, both at the National and State levels for many years. In February 2008, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Karnataka State Council, for the first time.
During his first tenure at the helm of FICCI (K) he guided several important initiatives, like the ‘Vision Suvarna Karnataka’, a Five point Agenda for Economic Development of Karnataka and transformation of Bengaluru as the gateway for investments into Karnataka. He was also in the forefront of the FICCI, hosting the Turkish Prime Minister and the accompanying Trade Delegation; the visiting delegation from the United States, on Patent and Trademarks etc.
On his re-appointment, Mr. Sajan Poovayya said, “In these challenging times, I look forward to leading various initiatives of FICCI aimed at inducing further industrialization in the State of Karnataka.”
His plans for 2009-10 include:
• Platform discussions with political parties on urban issues prior to the parliamentary elections
• Symposium on urban governance issues and their impact on industrialization in Karnataka
• Steering sensitization programs for a new urban governance regime for Bengaluru
• Seminar on intellectual property and information technology regulations.
• Seminar on arbitration as a mode of alternate dispute resolution for technology companies
• Leading Karnataka specific business delegations to US, Mongolia and Spain
• Leading Karnataka specific domestic business delegation to the State of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly to explore expansion by technology companies located in Karnataka
• Hosting the parliamentary and business delegations visiting Karnataka from various European and Asian countries
About Mr. Sajan Poovayya:
Sajan Poovayya is the Chairman of FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry), Karnataka Council for the second year running. He is a leading lawyer ('one of Asia's Leading Attorneys) who heads the firm Poovayya and Co. He is a domain expert in the areas of IT & ITES, Telecom and Media & Entertainment. He is also an expert on the Indian Constitution.
Poovayya has worked on a host of issues related to Bangalore; infrastructure, administration, management of public utilities, industrial development, etc. He has also been involved with several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) including the well known ones, against political rallies in Bengaluru and the installation of Speed Governors in trucks and buses.
