February 14, 2008 - Sydney, NSW – At this year's historic Australia Day TallShips race (26th of January 2008), charter company Sydney Harbour Tall Ships will announce that its entrant, tall ship Svanen, has negated the impact its operations have towards climate change.
This means Svanen, a 1922 Danish built historic barquentine, is the first commercial vessel in Sydney Harbour to go carbon neutral and offer carbon neutral cruises, wedding functions and corporate lunches.
With help from the Carbon Reduction Institute (http://www.noco2.com.au), Sydney Harbor Tall Ships and the Svanen have taken specific steps to monitor and reduce their impact on climate change. Emissions taken into account include those from food and beverages they supply to the office they operate and the fuel used in the auxiliary motors. Where emissions cannot be reduced, the Svanen will purchase carbon credits to counterbalance its unavoidable emissions.
Being the first vessel to take responsibility for its climate change impact, Svanen will be flying banners with a strong environmental message at this year's race – a race to save the planet. “We hope that their leading action will prompt other ships on Sydney Harbour to reduce their impact towards climate change and become carbon neutral”, Rob Cawthorne, Managing Director of the Carbon Reduction Institute said.
