  • Fort Lauderdale, FL (1888PressRelease) August 14, 2012 - As a college preparatory school, The Sagemont School's mission is to ensure its students are prepared for college. The school takes great pride in the achievements of its alumni. Its former students are now designing future aircraft engines and running the nursing departments at major hospitals, as well as starring in hit TV shows and being drafted to play for the NBA. One thing all these graduates agree upon is that The Sagemont School thoroughly prepared them for life beyond the school's walls.

"Sagemont taught me that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to. It also taught me the importance of setting goals and tackling them head on," shares Lauren Carey, MBA, BSN, RN. A member of the Sagemont Class of 2006, she is currently the Nurse Manager of the Oncology, Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery departments at the University of Miami Hospital.

Santiago Lattanzio, a member of the Class of 2007, agrees. "Sagemont encouraged me to challenge myself, to never stop learning, and to always strive for excellence." He is currently an aerospace engineer working for Pratt & Whitney, a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.

Lattanzio credits the school's incorporation of technology for preparing him for his future studies. So does Sagemont Alum Nicholas Abt, Class of 2008.

"Having a laptop in the classroom and being able to use the internet as a learning resource was invaluable. Being able to access hundreds of thousands of different websites containing reserves of information allowed me to fully develop a rounded comprehension of subject matter rather than what was just taught in class," explains Abt, who will be starting John Hopkins Medical School this fall. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 grade point average in microbiology and cell science from the University of Florida.

Sagemont students begin using computers as early as preschool and are fully immersed in the full Microsoft Office programs along with other software. "Starting in fifth grade, our students become part of our wireless laptop community," explains Brent Goldman, Ed.D., President of The Sagemont School.

He takes pride in the fact that his private school located in Broward County has been emphasizing the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) long before the government and public school system recognized the merit of these programs. "Sagemont offers a variety of high school courses that expose students to different specialties in the sciences."

Abt is appreciative of the fact that Sagemont exposed him to different disciplines. "I was not sure what I wanted to do before high school, but after exploring many avenues it was then that I found my love of science. Taking AP Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology gave me a solid idea of the basic principles underlying medicine. These exposures led me to pursue a college degree that would allow me to enter medical school."

Sagemont alumni are also excelling in the arts and athletics thanks to the experiences they received while attending the Weston school. "Part of Sagemont's mission is to create well-rounded students and give them a variety of on campus opportunities to explore different interests," explains Goldman. "We offer a range of extracurricular offerings that are desirable to a variety of students. We strive for a high level of quality in all that we do. We feel that students like Zack McCourt, a nationally ranked tennis player, and Carlos Pena, a successful singer/actor, benefitted from the high level of our sports and arts programs."

McCourt, Valedictorian of the Sagemont Class of 2011, is currently a top tennis player at Princeton. Fab Melo, Class of 2010, was recently a 1st round NBA draft pick and will play for the Boston Celtics this year. Carlos Pena, Class of 2008, is currently part of the ensemble TV show Big Time Rush on Nickelodeon and the popular boy band of the same name. The band won the 2012 Kids Choice Award for Favorite Music Group.

It's a true testament to the school that its alumni continue to excel in academics, athletics and the arts. Visit The Sagemont School blog at www.sagemont-privateschoolblog.com
