Report Summary: On February 19th, British aerospace and defense company BAE Systems released encouraging results for 2008 despite the weakening global economy. Solid long-term government-backed contracts and a weaker British Pound Sterling boosted the company's results during the past year. In 2008, sales rose 18% and underlying EBITA increased 31% relative to 2007. Nevertheless, some governments are scaling back military spending during the global recession and the UK officially started its withdrawal from Iraq on March 30th. However, during 2008, BAE's order book grew 20% compared to 2007. Since announcing the results, BAE has signed a GBP 450M contract with the UK Ministry of Defense for the support and maintenance of the RAF's existing Typhoon fleet.
The company has also announced deals with governments outside the UK totaling USD 257.7M. The group did however report lower free cash flow and cash inflow from operating activities during 2008. In order to assess the company as an investment objectively, we should focus on the company's long-term underlying fundamentals.
